Women of Determination receive awards for their contribution
By Correspondent.
Employers and employment facilities in Tanzania has been encouraged to open doors for women –especially entrepreneurs- to do part time jobs as it will allow them to be more productive in contributing to national economic growth. The challenge was given by DHL Express Managing Director for Tanzania, Blaise De Souza, when officiating second phase of the Annual Tanzania Women of Determination Award event which took place at the weekend in Dar es Salaam.
Mr De Souza said that part time jobs will best suit women than men, adding that for women who are doing business, it will give them an opportunity not only to support their business’ growth, but also to balance between family and career growth.
“I have noted that many people in Tanzania are not going for part time jobs. I am sure that this arrangement will best suit women who are also in business. Part time jobs help when business cycles are up and down. For any entrepreneur, you should also know your competitor. It helps to take your business to another level”, said Mr De Souza.
He further continued, “I want to tell women of determination that a dream you dream alone is just a dream but a dream you dream together will get you to reality. Business is like running a marathon, each time you need endurance and most of all you need determination”.
In order to run a business successfully, Mr De Souza emphasized to be keen with numbers. To know and understand the cash flow and the balance sheet; secondly, you need to be part of a group or network, such as the Women of Determination Awards, so as to exchange ideas and receive advice on how to handle your business.
“Tanzanians must learn how to run a business not a charity. You need to look after your good employees and you need to discipline the people who may pull your business down,” said Mr De Souza. This year’s Women of Determination Awards event saw women in 10 different sectors, namely Education, Law, Medicine, Agribusiness, Transport and Mechanics, Modeling and Art, Agriculture, Mining, Tourism and Business, being recognized for their courage in bringing change in areas they operate in.
Women of Determination Awards and Conference Founder, Fatma Salehe said that the award is designed to recognize unique contributions of women in social and economic fields.
The awardees shared their experience with others during the gala dinner, a move that helped to inspire more women to move towards making great changes in their lives as well as contributing to the national economy.
Women of Determination Conference is an initiative where women meet to increase their social economic self determination. It encourages women from all over Tanzania to raise their self esteem and to remind them that women are able to bring change to themselves and those around them, without waiting to be given any support. They are capable of great things. This is why the forum is done uniquely to address entrepreneurship traits that have helped many Tanzanian women to succeed and to share with others their success learnings.
According to Tanzania Private Sector Foundation Chairperson Ester Mkwizu said the forum would enable young, energetic and aspiring girls and women to share experiences of success in the country and therefore help women in alleviating poverty. Meanwhile, DHL has launched a new product called ‘Express easy’ which has opened doors for everybody to collect parcels on behalf of DHL and he/she will receive 10 per cent of the sending cost.
“Express easy introduced today is very simple to operate. It only has eight boxes with a standard tariff. We provide all the training and materials for anyone who wants to start this business. We will offer 10 per cent of everything you collect on behalf of DHL. What you need is to know how to write. At the moment, this product is restricted only for international shipment,” said Mr De Souza.
According to him, each parcel is charged according to the size of a box but not the weight. The product was launched during the dinner gala which was sponsored by DHL Tanzania Ltd and Covenant Bank.
